What is accelerated orthodontics?
OKC dentist Dr. Damon R. Johnson, DDS, describes accelerated orthodontics as a teeth straightening process similar to traditional orthodontics (braces). The primary difference is treatment time; the OKC dentist says accelerated orthodontics is completed in less than a year, versus the two-to-four year standard treatment course. The secret behind this faster treatment is a minor surgical procedure that alters the gums, allowing braces to work faster, explains the OKC dentist. A periodontist performs this procedure between five and ten days after braces are installed.
Advantages
The obvious advantages to accelerated orthodontics is a beautiful smile without the wait. The experienced OKC dentist says it’s a great option for those with a major event coming up, such as a wedding or special vacation. Aside from cosmetic enhancement, orthodontic treatment can actually help improve the overall health of the patient, Dr. Johnson explains. Straighter teeth, according to the OKC dentist, make it easier to eat and orthodontics can also address potentially serious underlying structural deficiencies.
Disadvantages
Despite its popularity and relative ease, the Edmond Dentist acknowledges there are a few minor drawbacks to accelerated orthodontics. Since it requires a surgical procedure to be effective, local anesthesia is needed. Discomfort similar to a routine cleaning is often reported. Itching is common during the treatment as teeth are moving at a hastened pace.
Types of braces
There are three types of braces, notes the OKC dentist, and they are all effective during accelerated orthodontic treatment. These are metal, lingual, and ceramic.
- Metal – Metal braces are the least expensive and most common type of orthodontic device. They are extremely strong and can handle even aggressive orthodontic treatment. The OKC dentist says metal braces may be initially uncomfortable and can irritate the gums.
- Lingual – Hidden behind the teeth, Dr. Johnson says lingual braces are the corrective measure of choice for adults who want to keep their orthodontia to themselves. According to the OKC dentist, lingual braces are harder to apply and desired results may not be easy to obtain.
- Ceramic – Ceramic braces are stain resistant and durable. Dr. Johnson explains that these braces blend with the color of the teeth. He cautions smokers and coffee drinkers, however, that the bands used to hold the braces in place can discolor quickly with repeated exposure to these staining agents.
Accelerated orthodontics can be used effectively where traditional orthodontics is recommended and are about the same cost.
