The Benefits of Using Natural Gas

Natural gas is one of the cleanest, most versatile and most economically sound options for an energy source, and it brings numerous benefits to both businesses and consumers. Some of its diverse applications include steam production, electricity production, manufacturing products, heating and cooling residences, and providing fuel for vehicles. Opting for natural gas also helps to keep harmful emissions out of the atmosphere, contributing to cleaner-air environmental efforts. Switching over to natural gas usage means switching to a fossil fuel that burns many times cleaner than oil or coal, and natural gas is also available in large supplies.

Cost-Effectiveness of Natural Gas

Compared to other vehicle energy sources such as gasoline and diesel fuel, natural gas is between 20% and 30% less expensive for consumers. The average cost of a liter or compressed natural gas is 35 cents cheaper than a liter of gasoline and 25 cents cheaper than a liter of diesel fuel. Supplies of natural gas are available at roughly half the cost of production as a barrel of oil. Compressed natural gas for vehicles also translates into more stable prices that aren’t subject to spikes during certain times of the year; the reason is that most of its costs are tied to the infrastructure of natural gas production itself.

Efficiency and Reliability

Appliances powered by natural gas cost less to operate than those powered by other fuel sources; most will also continue to work even when electrical outages occur. Natural gas companies are usually installing lines below ground, so outages due to bad weather or similar are rare. Compared to other fuels, a much higher percentage of natural gas flowing through pipelines reaches homes and businesses. This abundant energy source can power a wide variety of home appliances, including clothes washer/dryers, hot water heaters and gas furnaces. Switching to a high-efficiency natural gas heating and cooling system can save home owners up to $1,200 per year in energy costs. Natural gas finally generates up to 50% fewer carbon emissions that are harmful to the air quality.

Job Creation and Economic Benefits

The increased use of natural gas stimulates local economies and creates good-paying jobs for residents. Continuing technological innovations are ensuring large reserves of available natural gas future generations’ use. A large percentage of natural gas can be produced efficiently and cost-effectively on domestic soil, which can significantly reduce future dependence on relatively expensive quality oil imported from overseas.
